A petition on Change.org calling for a rejudgement of the women's figure skating competition at the Sochi Winter Olympic Games is setting records for the online petition website.
According to Change.org, the petition gained 700,000 signatures in the first six hours of being posted. As of Friday morning, the petition has surpassed 1.7 million signatures.
The petition demands an investigation into the winner of the event, Russia's Adelina Sotnikova.
Sotnikova took the gold medal Thursday with a score of 224.59, but supporters of the petition, along with many media members and fans of figure skating, believe South Korean star Yuna Kim deserved the gold. After Kim's final score of 219.11 was read, the primarily Russian crowd erupted with cheers, which drowned out jeers from others in attendance.
According to a press release from Change.org, 90 percent of signatures from the online petition are coming from South Korea, with the other 10 percent coming from inside the U.S. The site reported that nearly 100,000 new signatures were coming in every 15 minutes.
The traffic is coming in at five times the previous record. Change.org has a team of engineers working to keep the site up and running despite the heavy traffic.
