Chair Ron Wellman addressed the situation in a teleconference call with media Wednesday.
“The Committee is well aware of those injuries,” Wellman said. “We will follow those injuries. We will get updates on the injuries.
“We will be well aware of the latest information and whether that individual is going to be available to his team during the tournament.”
Embiid missed the last two regular season games for Kansas and isn’t expected to participate in the upcoming Big 12 Tournament. His status for the NCAA Tournament is questionable with reports he’ll miss the first weekend of play.
“It is a discussion point with the Committee, the injury reports, how that might impact the team,” Wellman added.
Eighth-ranked Kansas (23-8, 14-2) should be a No. 2 seed going into the tournament and could wind up playing in the Midwest Region at St. Louis with a possible showdown with top-seeded Wichita State.
“Where that puts the Jayhawks next week, we haven't even started those discussions yet,” Wellman reiterated. “I can assure that the Committee members are well aware of the that injury. We will be following it throughout the week. We will be in contact with Kansas to get various updates.”
“You need to remember, too, that we have seen Kansas play three times without him now.” Wellman added. “We'll have the opportunity to see Kansas play a number of times possibly this week in their conference tournament without him.”
Embiid’s averaging 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game for Kansas.
Even without Embiid, the Jayhawks feature a potent lineup with freshman sensation Andrew Wiggins. The guard is averaging 16.8 points per game and has cemented his status as a top 5 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft.
