Ngan Ngoc Do: Orange murder, shooting suspect denied bail

Ngan Ngoc Do, accused of killing a man in Orange County and critically injuring another, must stay behind bars, a judge ordered Friday.

An Orange County judge denied bail for 21-year-old Do and upgraded the charges against him to first-degree murder with a firearm and attempted first-degree murder. He remains at the Orange County Jail.

Sheriff's homicide detectives said Monday's slaying at the Waterside Apartments, off Shoals Drive in the Goldenrod Road neighborhood, stemmed from an argument over a debt.

Investigators said Schuyler Christy, 21, died in the apartment complex's parking lot. Jonathan Gonzales, 20, suffered a gunshot to the head and rescue crews took him to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

Hospital officials could not confirm Gonzalez's condition Friday.

Investigators have not released details of the incident. It is unclear whether Do owned one of the victims money or if one of them owned him money.

As deputies escorted him from the Sheriff's Office building to the jail, Do told reporters the victims had "tried to rob me."

Sheriff's deputy records show dispatch operators had received calls of shots fired at the apartment complex around 5 p.m. Monday.

Witnesses told deputies they had heard about five rounds and then saw people running through the complex.

The slaying forced dozens of residents from their homes while deputies remained on scene investigating and searching the area.

Deputies recovered a gun from the apartment complex, but they have not confirmed if it was the firearm used in the killing.

Records show Do has a criminal past. Daytona Beach police arrested him in July on charges of possession of oxycodone, possession of marijuana and carrying a concealed firearm during the commission of a felony.

Christy's death is the second murder in Orange County this year.
