Assistant coach James Borrego and Maurice Harkless talk about the loss

5 Quick Impressions of Magic rookie Victor Oladipo at summer league:
  1. Oladipo, the No. 2 pick in the draft, is Red Bull in sneakers. He is a live wire on both ends of the floor, playing at a breakneck pace. He’ll learn he can’t go 100 mph all the time during the NBA’s marathon season, but the former Indiana shooting guard will inject some infectious energy into a team during stretches when it is tired -- and tired of losing. Fans will love watching him play.
  2. Defensively, Oladipo will be a one-man trap, a constant irritation for opponents. He will be annoying, and I can see other players – maybe some teammates – who will be frustrated enough to push back. VO seems to play bigger than his 6-3 frame, closing hard and using his wingspan to disrupt passing lanes. The Magic will see if he can guard point guards, shooting guards and some smaller small forwards.
  3. The Magic have used the summer league to experiment with him playing at the point. The hope is that they can take a skilled, tenacious athlete and develop his play-making skills, sort of in the mold of Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook. In other words, the Magic will have to live with is turnovers. The reviews after three games have been mixed, as you might expect.
  4. I expect the Magic to play Olapido at point guard and shooting guard, give him a lot of playing time this season. Because with his non-stop aggressiveness, he can get to the free-throw line, which has been a glaring problem for the Magic. Oladipo was 12-of-14 at the line in the club’s third game of the summer league.
  5. The Magic have a solid citizen – and a delightfully refreshing character. Oladipo wore the Google Glass on draft night, glasses that allow the wearer to film video and narrate the action. He also is a pretty decent karaoke singer, with some moves to match. He’s a fun interview who isn’t afraid to address his flaws. He said he needs to limit his mistakes or “I might as well change my last name from Oladipo to Mr. Turnover.”
