Sen. Rubio called his immigration reform bill "an excellent starting point" and estimated that "95 percent, 96 percent of the bill is in perfect shape and ready to go."
In an interview with Jonathan Karl, Rubio pointed to border security as one element that needs improvement. "The debate is now about what that border security provision looks like, and if we do that, this bill will have strong bipartisan support," Rubio said. "If we fail, we're going to keep trying."
Conservative commentators have blasted Rubio on immigration reform. Glenn Beck has said that "Rubio is not on our side." Erick Erickson said, "Marco Rubio is being played the fool or we are being played the fool by Senator Rubio."
But Rubio dismissed those criticisms, saying that he agrees with conservatives on "virtually every other issue" and adding that he didn't know what it meant when critics say he is being played by the Democrats. Rubio said he had undertaken immigration reform because it is a major problem that is hurting the country.
In an interview with Karl, former Florida Gov. Bush said his dad, former President George H.W. Bush, is the best man he has ever met. "The guy's unbelievable, and he keeps coming back for more," Bush said.
"He didn't get into any kind of 'woe is me.' He dusted himself off and led an incredible life since 1993," Jeb said. "For a guy who has been an incredible leader in every way, he is the most humble man I know. What I've learned through my Dad is that humility is perhaps the most powerful tool of leadership that exists. And the world we're in today, it's focused on self a lot more than in previous times. A little humility would go a long way right now."
Jeb Bush talked about the health of his father, who is now 89. "I think it was hard at first for my Dad to transition to being immobile," he said. "I think he's found the right balance. I think he's in a good place. He's mentally alert. He's funny as all get out. He's spiritually in a place that we all should envy. He's more comfortable with his age, and that makes me happy."
