Clermont Police Department will participate in the 16th annual "Kicks 4 Guns" program throughout Central Florida from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday while supplies last at Stormy Hill Harley-Davidson, 2480 S. U.S. Highway 27.
Citizens can anonymously swap their unwanted guns for a Wal-Mart gift card for shoes or merchandise.
The annual buyback started in Orlando as a joint event with Central Florida Crimeline, which exchanges crime tips for cash, and Real Radio 104.1. In the past years, it has grown into a communitywide event with local law-enforcement agencies sponsoring their own Kicks 4 Guns events.
Last year, 1,065 guns were collected across Central Florida, 43 were illegal and nine stolen. In Clermont, 54 guns, including some that were illegal, were collected.
