The Orlando Sentinel’s college insider Matt Murschel has ranked all 125 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in the country entering the 2013 season. The Sentinel staff will take a closer look at a new team daily, counting backward from No. 125 to our projected No. 1 team.

Today at No. 122: Idaho

Coach: Paul Petrino (0-0, first season; 0-0 overall)

2012 record: 1-11 (1-5 in Western Athletic Conference, sixth in the WAC)

Look back: Vandals fans thought things couldn’t get any worse after sitting through a disappointing 2-10 season in 2011. Unfortunately, they did. With only 10 returning starters, Idaho struggled from the start, losing its first five games of the season before beating New Mexico State on Oct. 6. The next two weeks, the team lost back-to-back games to Texas State and Louisiana Tech before the school fired head coach Robb Akey. Idaho finished with a 1-11 record, its worst season since 2007, and school officials hired former Arkansas offensive coordinator Paul Petrino in the offseason.

Offensive starters returning: 7

Offensive starters lost: 4

Defensive starters returning:  4

Defensive starters lost: 7

Key losses: QB Dominique Blackmon, RB Ryan Bass, WR Mike Scott, FS Gary Walker, LB Sua Tuala, CB Aaron Grymes, LB Homer Mauga

Top returnees: C Mike Marboe, WR Jahrie Level, WR Najee Lovett, RB James Baker, DE Quinton Bradley, DE Maxx Forde

Strengths: The offensive line returns four starters including center Mike Marboe. The group will provide the cornerstone for Petrino’s offense heading into 2013. It will fall on their shoulders to help improve a rushing attack which was last in the WAC in 2012. … On the other side of the football, the defensive line returns experienced players as well including ends Maxx Forde (37 tackles, 4 sacks) and Quinton Bradley (21 tackles, 1 sack).

Weaknesses: Despite having seven returning starters on offense, Petrino and his staff will need to find a starting quarterback and running back. Senior Taylor Davis saw limited action (38-for-70, 338 yards) behind center last season, but redshirt freshman Chad Chalich has made a strong push this spring for the starting job. … Also looking to secure a starting spot are running backs James Baker and Jerrel Brown. Both will need to step up if the Vandals want to do better than last season’s 89 rushing yards per game.  …  Defensive coordinator Ronnie Lee has a big task ahead of him as he looks to rebuild a linebacking unit which has little-to-no experience.

Outlook: It can’t get any worse than it did last season. The team finished in the bottom in just about every statistical category including last in scoring offense (15.8 ppg) and last in scoring defense (42.4 ppg). Not to mention the team turned the ball over 39 times: 22 INTs, 17 fumbles. Petrino is familiar with the program, having spent two seasons in Moscow during the early 1990s, and knows what type of players he can recruit to rebuild the program. It’s going to be tough this season. Idaho will spend 2013 as an independent in football before joining the Sun Belt in 2014. That being said, the word for Vandals fans is patience.
