Oak Ridge junior Sharrika Barnett set an area record of 53.43 seconds to place second in the girls 400-meter dash on Sunday at the New Balance Nationals track and field meet in Greensboro, N.C.

Barnett surpassed a record of 53.52 set by Lauren Austin of Oviedo in 2002.

Recent West Orange graduate and UF signee Destiny Washington placed fourth in the New Balance competition with a time of 54.18.

New York state champion Zola Golden of Lagrangeville Arlington won in 53.22. She ranks second on the U.S. 2014 list behind Kaelin Roberts of Long Beach, Calif., Poly (52.52).

Barnett is now No. 5 on that list. She ranks eighth on the all-time Florida list.
