The news continues to be encouraging for Oviedo cross country/track coach Tom Hammontree recovering from heart transplant surgery last week.
“He is doing quite well,” she said. “He has been getting up and about and doing some physical therapy. He’s not ready to get out on the track yet, but that will come.”
Hammontree, 68, suffered from idiopathic cardiomyopathy, causing the left chamber of his heart to function at only 15 percent capacity.
Tom, who was inducted into the Florida Track Hall of Fame on Friday, received his plaque earlier this week from his twin brother John, who represented him during ceremonies at Daytona Beach.
Jane said there is no time frame for Hammontree to return to the track. Because of dangers of germs or infection, he can't be around a lot of people for a while.
