Florida commit Deondre Farrier of Lake Nona earns Nike Football Training Camp WR MVP

If anyone wondered who was the son of the woman wearing the blue "Lions Mom" hat at the Nike Football Training Camp on Saturday, they surely know now.

As the names of the camp MVPs were read aloud by Brian Stumpf, camp coordinator, Benita Foster screamed in excitement before Stumpf could even finish sounding out the syllables to Deondre Farrier's name.

The Lake Nona star earned the wide receiver MVP for the camp and mom's scream of surprise and delight made it quite clear she was extremely proud of her son.

Farrier, who committed to the Florida Gators in January, was also quite surprised.

"My heart dropped," Farrier said of hearing his name. "I did not expect it."

He showed out Saturday and in the process emerged from a talented group of wide receivers that included players like fellow Florida commit Tristan Payton of Jacksonville First Coast, George Campbell of Tarpon Springs East Lake, Kalif Jackson of Neptune Beach Fletcher, Deon Cain of Tampa Bay Tech, Kelvin McKnight of Bradenton Manatee and Montverde Academy sophomore Taiwo Oluwafunmila, six other receivers who stood out Saturday.

Saturday's performance earned Farrier an invite to Nike's The Opening, the midsummer event at which the top players in the country will be crowned at Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.

"There was a lot of great competition out here," Farrier said. "I just stayed on my level, head up, kept working hard, pretty much."

Farrier has been a fast riser on the scene after catchnig 55 balls for 909 yards and seven touchdowns a year ago. There were still plenty of people who had not seen Farrier in person, but he validated his status among the state's elite pass catchers.

"They know now," he said. "They better know now."

If nothing else, they know who his mother is.
