El Salvador is trying to lure away one of the U.S. men’s national team’s top young prospects.

Junior Flores, a 17-year-old midfielder from Manassas, Va., currently plays for German power Borussia Dortmund, which advanced to the UEFA Champions League final last year. The Salvadorans recently reached out to Flores’ camp about playing in a friendly with the senior national team in March, a source close to Flores said.

In order to play for El Salvador, Flores, who has represented the U.S with the under-17 national team, would have to file for a one-time switch through FIFA.

Considered one of the country’s brightest young talents, Flores turned down invitations from the U.S. under-18 and under-20 national teams in recent months in order to remain focused on his standing with Dortmund. According to the source, Flores remains “100-percent” committed to the U.S.

Flores did train with the U.S. under-20 team in Verona, Italy in November.

The standout midfielder turns 18 on March 26 and is expected to sign with Dortmund’s under-23 reserves.
