Disney's It's a Small World ride is turning 50, and it received a global birthday party on Thursday.
Included were international cast members from the countries of Epcot performing in front of Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom. "Good Morning America" also featured groups at theme parks in Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong and pre-dawn Anaheim, Calif.; Times Square in New York City; and in Queens, N.Y., at the site of the 1964 World's Fair, where It's a Small World debuted.
Disney's "It's a Small World" attraction is celebrating 50 years.
The attraction later was added at Disneyland, then at Disney World when the Magic Kingdom opened in 1971.
Addition recognition was planned for Magic Kingdom as live performing groups such as the Dapper Dans and the Main Street Philharmonic included "It's a Small World (After All)" to the day's repertoire. A mass park-guest singalong is planned before the new Festival of Fantasy parade, which steps off at 3 p.m.
"Good Morning America" also included a behind-the-scenes segment of the attraction and footage from Disney's Small World website (SmallWorld50.com) that shows folks from around the world singing. The site also is raising money for UNICEF, the organization tied to the original World's Fair attraction.
The attraction also got on ABC-produced "Live With Kelly & Michael" on Thursday. During the talk show's host chat, Kelly Ripa said It's a Small World is the first stop her family makes when visiting Magic Kingdom, and Michael Strahan called the song the "ultimate earworm."
