Who says today’s kids aren’t interested in reading now that they have iPods and iPads?
Yesterday, Disney Publishing hit the 1 million mark for downloads of its Disney Book apps for iPads, iPhones and iPod touches.

For anyone unfamiliar with the iOS apps, they aren’t simply text stories to be read on the electronic devices like Kindles and Nooks. Rather the interactive apps also allow users to read the stories aloud or have the stories read to them. The words and images on the pages are accompanied by additional media, such as songs, movie clips and interactive games.
Prices range from .99 cents to $8.99, depending on the title and the device for which it will be used (iPad apps are the most expensive).
Disney Publishing has nine titles and is highlighting them at the ongoing International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The titles include storylines from “Toy Story,” “Princess and the Frog,” “Cars” and “Epic Mickey” Digicomics, as well as other Disney stories for kids. There’s even a virtual sticker book that features Disney princesses.
According to a press release from Disney, all the apps have been in the Top 10 paid-books position on iTunes since the iPad debuted in April, and the “Toy Story” read-along app is in the Top 5 book apps position in more than 35 countries.
It’s easy to see how these particular apps and other interactive reading apps in general could gain in popularity and a greater availability of titles.
A New York Times report in December stated that publishers are eager to convert their existing libraries of illustrated print titles into e-books that can be viewed on devices such as the iPad and Nook Color. Such illustrated books, particularly titles for children, are seen as an additional revenue source by publishers who have been grappling with changing reading habits in the face of e-readers and other mobile devices.
In the report, a publisher with Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing said his publishing house wants to release e-books at the same time print versions are made available.
