The much-needed overhaul at "American Idol" is underway.
Who should be the new judges?
"Idol" sorely misses Simon Cowell, who brought cutting, common-sense commentary to the Fox singing contest. And he needed "Idol" as much as it needed him; he just isn't the same on "The X Factor," his own show.
"Idol" should install a few experts who know the business and can comment concisely. Being concise was a problem for the four judges this past season. Even when Minaj made a good point, she tended to blather on.
Why not move Jimmy Iovine, the smartest person on the show, to full-time judge?
Why not bring on David Foster, a successful producer, to offer his insights?
Minaj and Carey made me miss Jennifer Lopez, who was glamorous and thoughtful on "Idol."
There are reports that Jennifer Hudson and other "Idol" alumni are being considered for judging jobs. I fear they might be too sympathetic.
"Idol" needs tough love if it's going to rebound from a disappointing season. Some good male contestants wouldn't hurt, either.
