American Family Theater's Babes in Toyland begins with a cast of fairy tale characters coming to life, one by one, and telling their stories via dance in an epic opening sequence. There's Jack, Jill, Barnaby, Mary, Widow Piper and the toy soldiers, to name a few. And then they have adventures. Classic songs from Victor Herbert's 1903 original musical (some of which were also in the Laurel and Hardy film version from 1934) like "The March of the Toys," "Toyland" and "I Can't Do the Sum" are complemented by new songs by playwright and composer Don Kersey, glittering sets and special lighting effects that will hopefully keep the children engaged and entertained. Or you could go see The Nutcracker at every other theater in the state. Your choice.
