Two Lehigh Valley wrestlers are topping their weight classes in the weekly Amateur Wrestling News Division I Rankings this week.
Northampton' Jimmy Sheptock, a 22-0 senior at Maryland, has been No. 1 at 184 ever since Penn State's Ed Ruth lost to Cornell' freshman Gabe Dean, but this week, Easton's Mike McMullan is atop the 285-pound weight class.
McMullan, a two-time All-American at Northwestern who wrestled scholastically at Wyoming Seminary, took over the No. 1 spot last week after earning a 3-1 overtime decision over previous No. 1 Bobby Telford of Iowa, who will be at Lehigh tonight.
The decision marked the second time this season that McMullan (9-1), who finished second in the country last year, has knocked off the top-ranked wrestler in overtime. He previously earned his first-ever victory over two-time national champion Tony Nelson of Minnesota the week of Jan. 14.
McMullan has earned Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors twice this season, both times for knocking off the top-ranked wrestler.
Other area wrestlers ranked in the Top 20 by Awn this week: Corey Keener (Blue Mountain/Central Michigan), No. 12 at 125; Devon Lotito (Liberty/Cal Poly), No. 18 at 133; Zach Horan (Nazareth/Central Michigan), No. 9 at 141; Josh Kindig (Blue Mountain/Okla. St.), No. 11 at 149; Mike Ottinger (Parkland/Central Michigan), No. 8 at 174; Brandon Palik (Saucon Valley/Drexel), No. 19 at 197; Justin Grant (Easton/Bloomsburg), No.15 at 285), and Joe Stolfi (Souderton/Bucknell), No.180 at 285.
In Division II, Kutztown University was ranked No. 10 in the last poll released Jan. 31and Ziad Haddad, the senior 285-pounder for the Golden Bears from Bethlehem Catholic, was ranked No. 1 in the country while teammate Evan Yenolevich (Northwestern Lehigh) was No. 7 at 133.
In the NCAA Division III rankings released Feb. 11, Delaware Valley is No. 14
Wilkes, which is ranked No. 9 is led by Easton's Mark Hartenstine (No. 5 at 149).
Ranked wrestlers for Del Val include Aaron Karns (No. 7 at 197), Zach Roseberry (No. 9 at 285).
