Retail Watch: Allentown debuts new dancing destination
Wave Nightclub features elaborate lights, a state-of-the-art sound system and a glass-enclosed 1,300-square-foot dance floor providing views of Allentown's cityscape. Billed as a 'Vegas-style nightclub,' it replaces the Cosmopolitan Restaurant's former rooftop lounge. (November 4, 2013)
The two-story venue, which opened Oct. 25 atop the downtown Allentown restaurant, features elaborate lights, a state-of-the-art sound system and a glass-enclosed, 1,300-square-foot dance floor providing views of the cityscape. Billed as a “Vegas-style nightclub,” it replaces the restaurant’s former rooftop lounge, which closed last fall.
“The problem with the rooftop lounge was that it was seasonal,” said Bill Grube, who with partner Myron Haydt, opened Cosmopolitan at 22 N. Sixth St. three years ago. “And even when it was in season, there was still the possibility of rain.”
The duo and their construction team began work on the nightclub in March. Other changes to the space include glossed cement floors, plastered walls resembling waves, new furniture and two VIP rooms.
“We raised the bar with Cosmopolitan and we are raising it again with Wave,” Haydt said. “Allentown is the third-largest city in Pennsylvania and we will rival any of the clubs found in either of the two larger cities.”
Two full bars — one on each level — feature a variety of wines, top-shelf liquors and bottled beers, as well as one seasonal draft beer and specialty cocktails such as the Blue Wave (Svedka Clementine, Hpnotiq and white cranberry juice) and Surfer Girl (Bacardi Fuzion, peach schnapps and cranberry juice).
According to general manager Seth Parker, the 300-person-capacity nightclub caters to an “upscale 30+ crowd,” but everyone (21 and over) is welcome.
Patrons must abide by an “upscale casual” dress code, which means no T-shirts, tank tops, jerseys, ripped jeans, hats or sneakers are permitted. Also, guests must pay a $10 cover charge upon entering.
Wave’s resident DJ, DJ Xtina, spins a unique blend of open-format (blending different music genres cohesively), house and hip-hop music. Voted Atlantic City’s number one female DJ by Atlantic City Weekly, she will occasionally be replaced by other members of the elite BumSquad DJz on select nights.
In addition to Wave’s impressive music and lighting, Parker labels the club’s hospitable staff as a distinguishing asset.
“From the bartenders and barbacks to the owners and security personnel, everyone here is professional and nice,” he says.
Wave, which has a designated entrance on the side of Cosmopolitan, is open 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. According to Parker, hours are likely to be extended to 2 a.m.
