1. Disney California Adventure: How we got here and what's next

After more than a decade in existence and $1.1 billion in renovations, Disney California Adventure still probably needs another billion dollars in improvements before it can be worthy of the Disney name.

  3. Did California learn anything from Chicago's foie gras ban?

Before Charlie Trotter revealed he had quit serving foie gras and suggested eating the liver of fellow Chicago chef Rick Tramonto, before Ald. Joe Moore proposed that the city ban the sale of the fat livers of force-fed ducks, before the City Council enacted the ban and prompted Mayor Richard M. Daley to declare it "the silliest law that they've ever passed," before two years of foie gras prohibition followed as some Chicago restaurants continued serving the forbidden dish by giving it away or offering it under other names, and before the City Council repealed the ban with almost as little discussion as it had passed it in the first place, there was California.

Why Poochie's? Of the untold number of Vienna Beef slingers around town, why single out one place in Skokie? If you plotted every Chicago-area hot dog/burger/Italian beef quick-serve on a graph, the dots would line up along a bell curve. "Extraordinary"...

  13. Critic's Choice: Where to go for duck in L.A.

I admit, I love my duck. Young and broke and in Paris, I used to save up for the prix fixe menu at a little bistro in the 6th that included canette (female duck) roasted on the spit and floating island for dessert. I count the wild duck my friend Bill cooked 20 years ago as one of the finest things I've ever eaten.

  21. MCA's artEdge a funky, fashionable fundraiser

The Museum of Contemporary Art's annual artEdge benefit was a visual feast of art, performance and intriguing decor. Guests entered through the tented Sculpture Garden to discover a world of plastic where every object, including the floors, walls, table fixtures and even the chandeliers, was created from or coated with plastic, giving the space an otherworldly, ice-palace feel. Ninety percent of the materials used by Heffernan Morgan Designs were from recycled products that were again recycled after the event. The cloudlike, plastic ceiling pulsated with glowing lights as the crowd dined on cocktails and hors d'oeuvres from Wolfgang Puck, who catered the event.
