  3. Stylists step forth

    The Honolulu Star-Advertiser
Consider the fashion stylist, an unsung hero of the fashion world. Stylists help designers and boutiques craft an image, but are mostly invisible, recognized only by a name in small type attached to photo spreads. But that is changing with the...

  5. THE KITCHN: How to cook perfect millet every time

Millet is an ancient seed, originally hailing from Africa and northern China, and it remains a staple in the diets of about a third of the world's population. Rich in iron, B vitamins and calcium, millet has a mild corn flavor and is naturally gluten free. Sure, on first glance you might be tempted to think that raw millet looks like birdseed. But these little yellow beads have a really lovely and light texture when cooked, are relatively quick-cooking because of their small size, and are incredibly versatile in dishes ranging all the way from breakfast to dinner.

  7. THE KITCHN: Dinner Party Recipe: Braised Shredded Beef in Tomatoes and Red Wine

When I think about throwing a dinner party, especially a big one like this polenta supper I'm sharing with you this week, my thoughts immediately go to: What can I make ahead? Last week, I had an easy answer: a shredded, succulent mess of beef braised in red wine and tomatoes, falling apart in its juices. It's a terrific make-ahead dish, since like most braises, this beef gets better overnight, and takes all the stress of a main dish off your hands entirely. Sound good? It gets better.

  17. In a pickle about salt

Q: I have a recipe for pickles that calls for 1 cup coarse salt for 6-8 quart jars of pickles. If I reduce the salt to 1/2 cup, will it affect how the pickles turn out? What if I reduce it to 1/4 cup of salt? There are enough other flavors in the recipe (hot peppers, dill and garlic) to make up for the lack of salt flavoring, I believe. I guess my question is, if I reduce the salt significantly will the cucumbers still turn into pickles?

  21. OPINION: Passing on 'pass the salt'

    Tonawanda News, North Tonawanda, N.Y.
In the realm of taste, I've always preferred salty to sweet. Asked a preferred not-so-good-for-you indulgence, give me a pile of French fries over a slice of chocolate cake any day. But oddly enough, I hardly ever add extra salt to things (except, oddly...
