Quinoa. It's a South American grain-like crop that has come to be recognized as a nutrient-dense superfood, and it's all the rage right now. The seeds, or "grains" (quinoa is not a true cereal, though its seeds resemble and are similarly used like grains), of the plant can be found at most supermarkets, and it can be cooked like rice, added to soups and stews, and even popped.

    Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
A word of advice. Never use the phrase "just a burger" with Nancy Silverton. I did and was promptly challenged on every aspect of burger-making, starting with where to buy the meat, what grind, size of patty, how to cook it, what to serve with it, what...

    The Daily Independent, Ashland, Ky.
I don't know if the way I like hot dogs is Southern, but I know everyone has his or her own way of piling on the toppings, or avoiding toppings. Although I'll eat them with mustard only, I like them with mustard, onions, sauce (or chili, depending on...

  12. In a pickle about salt

Q: I have a recipe for pickles that calls for 1 cup coarse salt for 6-8 quart jars of pickles. If I reduce the salt to 1/2 cup, will it affect how the pickles turn out? What if I reduce it to 1/4 cup of salt? There are enough other flavors in the recipe (hot peppers, dill and garlic) to make up for the lack of salt flavoring, I believe. I guess my question is, if I reduce the salt significantly will the cucumbers still turn into pickles?
