  1. Taste of Morocco

Morocco dropped by. I wasn't expecting a North African kingdom, but company is always welcome. Especially such charming company — those cinnamon-warm spices, those lush stews and that habit of pressing savory against sweet. Intoxicating.

  3. THE KITCHN: A creamy fish chowder -- hold the dairy

Cooking for my family during a holiday visit to Seattle, I came up with this chowder as a light yet comforting weeknight dinner to give us a break from the rich holiday meals we had been eating. The broth skips the usual milk or cream and is instead thickened by pureeing cooked potatoes and aromatics into a creamy, flavorful base studded with chunks of mild white fish and soft vegetables. Warm, satisfying and not too heavy, this dairy-free soup is the perfect meal for a chilly winter evening.

  5. Mario Batali: A simple spaghetti is the perfect Rx for post-holiday food fatigue

During the month of December, the food fest that is Christmas dinner becomes an obsession. It's all consuming to plan, shop for and cook a feast of the fishes -- be it seven, nine, or 13 dishes -- or whatever your particular tradition may be.

  7. Cook easy seafood dinners for Lent

PARIS — Living in France has meant that my once passing fancy for all things that swim has exploded into a very big love. From picking out the tiniest of bulots (sea snails) with needlelike tools and cracking open the claws of a fresh-caught homard (lobster) to learning that the best way to enjoy raie (skate) is with a simple lemon, butter and caper sauce, I have fallen hard. I find myself visiting the poissonnieres more often than I do the butcher, because I’ve learned that fish — which I once believed was a tricky thing to cook — is one of the easiest and healthiest dinners you can make.

  9. Meatball sliders

There's nothing more traditional than serving a big pot of chili when a bunch of friends come over to watch a big game like the Super Bowl. Sometimes, though, I like to try something different. Last year I surprised my husband and friends with meatball sliders that were a big hit.

  13. A fresher take on Super Bowl eats

Super Bowl Sunday is the food version of the staccato note at the end of a lot of college teams' fight songs.
Super Bowl Sunday is the food version of the staccato note at the end of a lot of college teams' fight songs. It's the last excuse before maybe Memorial Day to eat stuff that normally shouldn't cross one's plate. Chicken wings and beer go hand-in-hand...

  15. Maggie's Farm delivers big flavors

At Maggie's Farm, on a late December night, the small, square Harford Road dining room was full, with couples and foursomes along the edges, and in the middle, two separate large parties, of 12 and 18, celebrating birthdays.

  17. Stuffed chicken breasts save the day

My husband is notorious for bringing people home for dinner with very little notice, or none at all. On nights like those, these stuffed chicken breasts are just the thing: fast and special enough for company, especially when served with an easy yet elegant pan sauce.

  23. THE KITCHN: Quick weeknight dinner: Braised Lentils and Chard Topped with an Egg

Eggs and I have a hot-and-cold relationship. Some months I can't stand them and then, suddenly, I find myself in a phase where I find them deeply satisfying. Maybe it's the chilly weather or the desire for simple, inexpensive meals, but this is one of those "put an egg on it" moments when I'm inclined to top any lunch or dinner with some sunny protein, especially when that meal involves braised lentils and silky ribbons of chard.
