    The Dish - Orlando Sentinel

  7. The Find: In new territory at Omar's Restaurant in San Gabriel

When the platter of steaming, saucy chicken chunks is set on our table at Omar, a months-old Uighur restaurant in San Gabriel, it's clear we're in uncharted culinary territory. The sauce is dappled with tingle-inducing Sichuan peppercorns and chocolate brown star anise pods. Cardamom leaves poke out from a layer of sliced garlic cloves that blankets the meat. But the wide, flat handmade noodles soaking up those juicy flavors resemble a Moldavian grandmother's handiwork.

  17. A tradition with roots

On Thanksgiving, I make four kinds of pie, at least two kinds of bread and several batches of homemade croissants, plain and chocolate. For New Year's, it's rib roast and Yorkshire pudding. I even do it up for the 4th of July with a blueberry, strawberry and pastry cream tart shaped like an American flag.

  23. Reuben's Deli A Nosh Above

Jewish delis have come and gone in West Hartford, where a good number of residents mourn Hartford's old-time North End nosheterias with heartbreak (and heartburn). Reuben's, which opened in January, is not your grandpa's deli, but then it's not trying to be. The place was overwhelmed with eager diners when it first opened, but service has improved.
