1. In 1800s Williamsburg, 'Cheap Store' made black merchant rich

Like many other small towns across the rural South, Williamsburg spent most of the late 1800s struggling to recover from the catastrophic effects of the Civil War.

5. Culinary SOS: La Grande Orange Cafe's kale and quinoa salad

Los Angeles Times
Dear SOS: I recently "rediscovered" La Grande Orange in Pasadena's Del Mar station and absolutely love its kale and quinoa salad — it's light and refreshing, although sometimes it is a bit too heavy on the dressing.... I have enjoyed it often enough...

7. THE KITCHN: An adaptable breakfast tart made with winter greens

This time of year can be a tricky one for inspired breakfasts. Oatmeal is my go-to on weekdays, and on the weekends we often flail for something a bit more interesting but no more complex. With this morning tart, flail no more!

9. ONE FOR THE TABLE: Time for broccoflower

If it's winter, I must be cooking broccoflower. I picked some up at the grocery the other day because, frankly, our vegetable larder of turnips, rutabagas, kale and beets is starting to freak me out. Plus, I can never resist the lime-green color of broccoflower, and I love its nutty flavor when browned, too.

11. Market Fresh: Tuscan kale

You can find all sorts of kale at the market these days, including frilly pastel-colored flowering varieties and rough-edged Russian kale with its red border. But probably the sweetest kale is the one sometimes called Tuscan. Actually, it travels under many names, including black kale, cavalo nero and dinosaur kale (for its dark green, somewhat scaly-looking leaf). In Tuscany, it's sometimes called lacinato. Whatever the name, cook it carefully and this is one great green, with a creamy texture and deep, sweet flavor.

13. Salad beats winter blues

I’m not one to make New Year’s resolutions — I tend to set annual goals on my birthday in July instead — but I do always roll (and I mean roll) into January with a big case of food fatigue and a vow to end the crazy nonstop nibbling, which is part of the holiday fun, no matter which side of the pond I’m on.
