  • Gardening: Prune spring bushes in the week after blooming

    In our yard, the most beautiful bloom at the moment is a deciduous azalea, Mandarin Lights (Azalea x Mandarin Lights/Northern Lights Hybrid). It has the most glorious blooms just outside my kitchen window. The plant, purchased years ago at one of the annual plant sales held by the local chapter of the American Rhododendron Society, is tall and leggy with blooms only at the top. I asked about pruning it at a subsequent sale and was told to be relentless — cut it back to about a foot. I didn't, so now I have this scrawny shrub that only looks good for a few weeks each spring.
