1. Pare down the pear prep

Years ago I happened to be at a Los Angeles food event where caterers were showing off their most celebrated dishes. I was struck by a platter of slightly wrinkled pears drizzled with ribbons of glossy red glaze.

Forget the simple quiche, fruit salad and cheese Danish that once fueled home-cooked Sunday brunches. Nobody cooks anymore. Too few of us entertain. That's too bad, because I like nothing more than starting off the week with a Bloody Mary, good...

  11. Test Kitchen tips: Homemade doughnuts

There's something magical about the doughnut. You don't have to be Homer Simpson to swoon when you're greeted with all those bright colors and sparkly decorations in a doughnut shop display case. But no matter how wonderful they appear, it's hard to find a store-bought doughnut that compares with homemade.

  15. Take time for tea biscuits

Q: Although I read the food section every week in the Sun Sentinel, I never thought I'd be one of those people who would write in. But, here I am and I know that if anyone can help me, it's you. I just went back to my hometown, after 30 plus years, outside Philadelphia, and went to a favorite bakery in Lansdowne, called My Old Place Bakery. Not only do they have the absolute best cinnamon buns they also have my very favorite tea biscuits, the doughy kind with raisins in them. Now for my question: Every time I buy tea biscuits at the grocery store bakeries they crumble, like a scone. The ones at My Old Place Bakery are so soft. Can you tell me where to find them or tell me the recipe? — Annette Pappas, Hollywood
