9. The Review: Westside Tavern at Westside Pavilion is an unexpected delight

I can tell you my friends weren't all that excited when I told them where we were headed for dinner: the Westside Pavilion. Granted, dining in a shopping mall doesn't quite have the allure of Providence or the Bazaar by José Andres. But then again, I told them, you never know where the next great restaurant will pop up in Southern California. It could be in the most banal of strip malls, tucked away in Glendale or hiding out in the O.C. That's one of the peculiarities -- and delights -- of this endlessly fascinating area.

11. Mary's Secret Garden: for the vegan with panache

VENTURA'S favorite son, Erle Stanley Gardner, author of the Perry Mason mystery books, never wrote about a meal that didn't begin with a martini and include a steak and baked potato, but times have changed since his fictional hero's mid-century heyday. Today's detectives -- fictional or otherwise -- can't determine a car's owner by peeking at the registration on the steering wheel column the way Mason could, and they most likely can't pack away the red meat the way he did.

757-247-4781
When I was a kid, my family used to pick apples in what was the Mennonite Colony in the Denbigh area of Newport News. Those apple groves are now gone, replaced by houses. Even so, there are places in Virginia where you can still pick your own apples,...

Times Staff Writer
Monday night, 9 p.m. The darkened streets were eerily empty. At Bread, there were five people at a window table and a couple at the bar. "It looks promising," said Nemr Abboud, co-owner of the restaurant. "Yesterday, we had zero. Today for lunch, zero....

20. An iconoclast with a sense of humor

Everyone has a favorite David Sedaris piece. Mine, I don't mind saying, is the essay "Me Talk Pretty One Day," in the collection of the same name. Just like everyone else who claims to love Sedaris (we were unable to procure a single disgruntled reader for this piece), my reasons are personal. Something about trying to learn French, which, if you don't mind, I'd rather not talk about just now.

22. Hey, big spender

Drink a martini, Scotch on the rocks or even a beer, and nobody looks askance. And if you want wine, this is the place to uncork one of those big, bold California Cabs. What was that one Robert Parker gave such a high score? Screaming Eagle. Yes, I do believe they have a bottle of the '96 at $3,500 should anybody feel the need to show they've got money to burn.
