1. Smartphone apps for the beer lover

The smartphone revolution has invaded every facet of modern life, even the sanctity of the saloon. But there are some useful applications that can take your beer-hunting into the digital realm. Apart from the all-purpose apps like Yelp and the social networks, here are a pair of useful options for your iPhone or Android device that can help you find places to drink, discover new beers, and even remember what was in last night's ill-advised flight of imperial stouts.

  3. Spanish tempranillo grape is new star in Texas winemaking

For two years, Neal Newsom, a well-regarded West Texas grower, stubbornly put off entreaties from a would-be Dallas winemaker in his 20s to gamble on tempranillo. It was the late 1990s and Newsom had never heard of Dan Gatlin, nor did he like what the...

  9. Cruise ships feature a variety of dining options

Variety is definitely the spice of life aboard today’s cruise ships (a far cry from the dining situation in the 1970s when Jeraldine Saunders wrote her book, The Love Boats, and the subsequent movies and television series The Love Boat based upon her work came along and were credited with popularizing cruising). Back then, there was typically only one restaurant for dinner onboard –bored or not, take it or leave it!). Now ships have multiple restaurants offering different menus and ambiance to suit different moods and tastes. Here are dining offerings on four ships, in four categories (moderate, premium, upper-premium and ultra-luxury) that feature at least half dozen eateries onboard (and in one case, two dozen) so if passengers so wish, they can dine at a different venue every evening of a seven-night cruise (with one of the nights being room service dinner –24-hour room service is available on all these ships on a complimentary basis).

  11. Finding the best spring beers

We may have it easy in Los Angeles when it comes to winter, but that doesn't mean we can't be excited for spring's arrival. Today marks the vernal equinox, and with it comes longer days, exciting farmers market finds, and a whole new variety of beers to take the place of winter's stouts and barley wines.
