On Chicago Marathon weekend, some businesses can't lose

Running has a reputation as a low-gear, budget-friendly sport. But get enough people pounding the pavement, and their dollars can add up to the tune of about $277 million, according to Bank of America Chicago Marathon officials.

Nearly 39,500 runners took part in last year's marathon, each spending an average of $566 per day, according to an economic impact report by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's Regional Economics Applications Laboratory that was commissioned by the Chicago Marathon. The race also drew roughly 1.7 million spectators.
