City Council gives final OK to landmark Fulton Market district

The City Council on Wednesday gave final approval to landmark the Fulton Market meatpacking district, capping more than a year of impassioned resistance from many property owners and food wholesalers angry that the historic designation limits their redevelopment options. The Fulton-Randolph Market District is the city's 56th landmark district but the first in an active industrial area. Spanning more than a dozen blocks mostly on Fulton Market and Randolph Street, the district includes 86 buildings that can't be demolished or altered in a "historically inappropriate" way.
