Paula Smail's Burbank apartment, a decorator's take on small-space living
When Paula Smail, owner of the Studio City boutique Henry Road, recently downsized, her design philosophy didn't change. She still has bold color, loads of art and an abundance of whimsy. Here she offers design tips on creating a colorful look in a limited space.

The kitchen and living room have abundant natural light courtesy of the cotton duck curtain panels Smail made from Henry Road fabric. On the far wall, she hung a drunken cow painting by RozArt she found on Etsy and an illustration by Matthew Langille. The vintage dining chairs were a thrift-store find in Idyllwild. If you don't have money for a beautifully designed sofa or coffee table, Smail said, buy something basic and spend money on artworks and accessories that reflect your personality.
