Competing against the world’s best all-around athletes, Austin Bahner currently sits in sixth place after day one with 3958 points at the USA Championships Decathlon in Des Moines, IA.
Included in the Decathlon field is current world record holder and 2012 Olympic Champion Ashton Eaton, as well as 2011 World Champion Trey Hardee. Bahner began the day with the seventh best 100m time of 10.84 and followed that with the fourth best Long Jump of 23-6.25. He threw the Shot Put 42-5.5 and High Jumped 6-1.5 before running 49.11 in the 400 meters to finish the day. You can watch the final event of the Decathlon Saturday at 5:18pm live on NBC.
Competing for the final time in a Shocker uniform, Tanya Friesen finished 16th in the Heptathlon with 5295 points. Friesen ends her career as the best Heptathlete in WSU history with a score of 5899 points at the recent NCAA Championships. She also earned first team All-American honors during the 2013 Outdoor season.
In the USA Junior Championships portion of the meet, Taylor Thomas placed 20th in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:03.19.Saturday will be the final day of competition for the Shockers with Bahner continuing the Decathlon as well as Tyson Holmes and Chase Pote in the Junior Javelin.
