Sacramento Mountain Lions' Season to Begin in September

The United Football League announced Wednesday that it will operate a four-team format for the 2011 season.

The four teams kicking off the season are the Las Vegas Locos, Omaha Nighthawks, Virginia Destroyers and Sacramento Mountain Lions.

The Lions’ opener will host two-time UFL champions Las Vegas Locos Saturday, Sept. 17 at Hornet Stadium.

One team that won’t be returning is the Hartford Colonials. The Colonials players will join the other UFL teams through an allocation draft that will be held Monday.

In a press release, UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue expressed disappointment that league had to suspend the Colonials’ season, but said that the league will review the viability of returning to Hartford at the end of the 2011 season.

The mid-September start date will allow UFL to retrieve players who attended NFL training camps but did not make final rosters.

The entire UFL season schedule will be announced next week.
