Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 39 Monday, which bans the importation, production and sale of caffeinated beer beverages at retail locations throughout California.
The ban will take effect January 1, 2012.
“I applaud Governor Brown for signing SB 39. Caffeinated beer beverages are a threat to public health,” said bill author democratic state Senator Alex Padilla. “The added caffeine masks the side effects of the high alcohol content, which can lead to binge drinking and dangerous behavior.”
Massachusetts, New York, Washington, Utah, Michigan and Kansas have all banned these drinks.
