The woman, identified as Allix Nicole Barz, allegedly jaywalked across the highway with another 18-year-old friend just after midnight near Mussel Cove near Dana Point. Officials said she stepped out in front of a 2002 Mercedes SUV and was hit.
Barz's friend was not struck by the vehicle, officials said. Paramedics rushed Barz to Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach where she was pronounced dead.
Police did not cite or arrest the 17-year-old driver of the SUV and officials say there did not appear to be any unusual circumstances in the teen's driving.
Police do not yet know what Barz and her friend were doing in the area.
