HUNTINGTON PARK, Calif. (KTLA) -- Authorities charged a man on Wednesday in the March murder of a woman in a vitamin store.
Arturo Bejarano Jr., 50, was charged with capital murder in the killing of 39-year-old Veronica Urtado Reyes during a robbery at the Global Nature store on March 15, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
Authorities say Bejarano was previously convicted of burglary in El Paso, Texas.
Bejarano was scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday and is being held without bail.
Prosecutors will decide later whether to seek the death penalty.
Police said the crime, which happened during daylight hours, was incredibly brazen.
"Businesses open... People walking around going home from work... Doors are open... Pretty bold on this suspect's [part], the way he did this," said Huntington Park police Det. Sgt. David Cassidy.
The attack put residents and shoppers in the primarily Latino neighborhood on edge.
They said crime was getting worse.
"We're not safe in the neighborhood," said area resident Carmen Rodriguez. "That's amazing. That's really bad."
