Suspect in Hit-and-Run Death of Pregnant Mother Charged
VICTORVILLE, Calif. (KTLA) -- An Apple Valley man accused of striking and killing a pregnant woman and her unborn child was charged Monday with one felony count of hit-and-run causing death and one misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence.

If convicted of all charges, Brandon Lee McCullough, 37, could face up to four years in prison.

Dejuan Rene Smith, 20, was pushing her 14-month old daughter in a stroller on Balsam Avenue on July 29 when she was hit from behind by a Ford truck.

The impact killed Smith and her unborn child, San Bernardino County Sheriff's officials said.

The driver of the truck sped off after the crash.

Paramedics pronounced Smith, a Victorville resident, dead at the scene, according to the San Bernardino County Coroner's Office.

She was 5 months pregnant.

Smith's 14-month-old daughter was thrown from the stroller, but survived.

Police say they were able to link McCullough to the 2000 Ford F-250 pickup truck that hit Smith.

McCullough is being held on $100,000 bail.

He is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday.
