LONG BEACH, N.Y. -- A man sun bathing at Long Beach Wednesday afternoon was mowed down by a police officer responding to a water rescue.
The victim was reportedly lying in a chair when he was run over by the SUV shortly before 12:30 p.m.
The victim, described as a man in his 40s, was rushed by helicopter to Nassau University Medical Center.
He suffered internal injuries, however city officials said they are not expected to be life-threatening.
It's unclear why police officer did not see the sunbather in his path.
Although, it's being reported the victim's chair was low to the ground and may have been hidden in sand.
The surfer involved in the initial call was not injured.
