Suicidal Driver Who Killed Girl on PCH in Malibu Gets Prison
13-year old Emily Shane and Sina Khankhania, 28
Prosecutors claimed 28-year old Sina Khankhanian drove his car recklessly at speeds up to 70 mph and crashed near Heathercliff Road on April 3, 2010.
His vehicle struck Emily Shane, 13, as she walked along the shoulder of the highway from a friend's house to meet her father at a nearby shopping center.
Authorities believe Khankhanian was deliberately trying to crash his car in an attempt to kill himself, but that he hit the 8th grader by accident.
The impact sent Shane's body 30 feet into the air, while Khankhanian's car later collided with a power pole and rolled several times.
Prosecutors say the crash was the culmination of a reckless drive by an angry man who had just been fired from his job at an animal clinic in Winnetka.
Khankhanian's reckless driving prompted several 911 calls before he ran off the road.
Witnesses testified about Khankhanian's erratic driving, including tailgating vehicles, passing cars on the right and creating an overall dangerous situation.
A mistrial was declared in Khankhanian's first trial.
