Debra Ayala Tapia, 38 (Santa Ana Police Dept.)
Debra Ayala Tapia was sentenced to one year in county jail after she pleaded guilty to felony charges of lewd acts upon a child, oral copulation of a minor under 16, and unlawful sexual intercourse. Three other charges were dismissed as part of a plea deal.
Prosecutors say the relationship between Ayala and the boy began in early 2009.
Ayala, who has three children of her own, ages 17, 12, and 7, began inviting the boy to her home, according to attorneys. The two began a sexual relationship between February and November 2009.
The illicit relationship was discovered by the boy's mother who found suggestive letters from Tapia in her son's room.
"She found it odd and started investigating," says Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.
"She talked to her son about the letters and he admitted that he had sexual intercourse with the woman."
The boy's mother noticed that the woman, who was a neighbor and family friend, was pregnant, Bertagna said.
The woman gave birth to a baby girl in November 2009 and a DNA paternity test performed in February showed the boy was the father, he said.
The boy's mother reported the incident to Santa Ana police on March 14, Bertagna said and Ayala was taken into custody.
The little girl is being raised by the boy's family and Ayala is battling for visitation rights.
Ayala, who had faced more than seven years in jail, is required to register as a sex offender as part of the plea agreement.
