'Eye-to-Eye' Blue Whale Encounter Caught on Tape
DANA POINT, Calif. (KTLA) -- A group of whale watchers are still reeling with excitement after an up-close-and-personal experience with a blue whale off Dana Point.

The encounter was captured on video during a whale watching trip Friday afternoon with 'Captain Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari.'

The boat was stopped when the whale approached head on, much to passengers' delight.

Viewers in the underwater pod also got a close-up look as the giant mammal swam just a few feet away from the boat.

"You can even see the eye," Capt. Dave Anderson said in an email, calling the encounter the closest he has ever had with a blue whale.

"We have had the best blue whale watching that I have ever seen in the last four days...it has been virtually impossible to NOT see a blue whale or fin whale in any direction," Anderson said.

"Most of them are lunge feeding right at the surface...and we have had several of them approach the boat to everyone's delight," he continued.

Anderson says they've spotted more blue whales this year than in years past.
