I will always be first to admit that I am a true weather brat. If my precious summer afternoon temperature drops below 70-degrees, or heavy clouds dare to block the sun, nine times out of ten I will throw a fit. The upside, however, is that when the sun is shining bright, heating up the local scene to a perfect 75-degrees, nothing can get in the way of my amazing mood. On these glorious afternoons, I love to hit the beach, walk my dog along the bay, or picnic at the park.
Picnicking is an age-old summer pastime that simply never gets tired, if you do it right. Key components to a perfect picnic include great company, refreshing drinks, simple, tasty snacks, and a serene setting with a view. My recommended San Diego picnic spots include La Jolla Cove, Balboa Park in Hillcrest, Kate Sessions Park in Pacific Beach, or Seaport Village and The Embarcadero in downtown San Diego. Base your location on your company; are you bringing a hot date, or a group of close friends? Once the guest list and destination are set, it’s time to create the menu.
Cheap champagne and boring cheeses are so last summer; this year, upgrade your picnic game with innovative tips and trends from local mixology and culinary experts. On August 13, Cups La Jolla is hosting a fun cooking class dedicated to the art of the picnic, featuring Snake Oil Cocktail’s Ian Ward, Lucien Connor of Searsucker and Whisknladle, and Chef Chad White of EGO Culinary Trends. During this interactive class, you will get all the tools you need to create a dream picnic menu, including satisfying elixirs made from this season’s freshest local produce to create your own craft cocktails, and an assortment of picnic-ready food recipes, like boneless fried chicken salad with arugula, pickled beans and green goddess dressing, fresh artisanal breads, and a mixed berry salad.
The Perfect Picnic is a three-hour hands-on cooking class taking place at Cups La Jolla on August 13 from 2:30 to 5:30pm. The class is $65 per person, and there are 16 spots available.
