The extreme heat we've been having could show up soon as an extreme energy bill, but for some customers it might not be as bad as you think. If you're a Reliant Energy monthly flex plan customer who paid $500 last July, you can expect to pay about a $100 less this July. That's about a 20% savings. The new lower prices will go into effect July 1st.

"It's a necessity, not just a luxury," Mason Bechtel said about air conditioning.

The Reliant Energy customer has tried keep her energy consumption down by doing things like adding window awnings to help cool her home, but because of serious health problems, she must keep her thermostat lower than most homeowners.

"It's very difficult," said Bechtel. "I have COPD and have to be on oxygen. So it's important I keep my temperature cool or I can't function."

The 62 year old who often pays around $600 and up per month for her electricity bill, was ecstatic to hear, her provider Reliant Energy, is significantly lowering their rates.

"That is so cool," she said.

"In the last two months Reliant Energy has actually lowered it's prices for it's monthly flex plan customers by up to as much as 20%," said Pat Hammond, a spokesperson for Reliant Energy.

The reason Reliant can do this is because wholesale energy prices have dropped and because it was recently acquired by NRG Energy.

"Now that we're backed by one of the largest energy producers in the state, we're able to eliminate the middle man basically," said Hammond.

Although the automatic price reduction is for it's residential customers on month-to-month flex plans, Reliant says its also offering other great plans for those who wants to lock in a low rate.

"Last summer in July we saw prices spike up to 16 to 18 cents kWh," said Hammond. "They've come down significantly since then."

Some rates are as low as 10.4 cents per kilowatt-hour for Reliant's Power Tracker Plan. Customers like Mason Bechtel are hoping their rates will continue to drop and stay low.

"I think that's great," said Bechtel. "We all need a break.... We really do."
