Online Dish: Political Scandal! Rick Santorum's Pro-Life Wife Had Affair with Abortion Doctor

Talk about bad timing for a political scandal. As the GOP Presidential hopefuls campaign fiercely for the South Carolina primaries a secret from one of the candidate's wife's past has emerged.

Karen Santorum, 51, wife of the ultra pro-life conservative candidate Rick, didn't always used to feel that way. According to Newsweek, the ultra pro-life wife and mother of seven children, whom she even home schools, used to live a double life.

According to them she had a 6-year love affair with an abortion doctor, Tom Allen, 40 years her senior. Making it even more disturbing, he delivered her as a baby.

According to Newsweek, Tom Allen, now 92, claims his one-time lover had no problem with his chosen profession while they lived together for six years in the 1980s." Karen, who like her husband, says she opposes abortion, even in cases of rape, and doesn't believe in using birth control, lived with the Pittsburgh abortion doctor for most of her 20s in the 80s.

What a switch from the matronly devout Catholic she plays on the campaign trail.

Since she left Dr. Allen for her current husband, Karen's politics have taken a sharp turn to the right, which doesn't sit well with the doctor, now 92, or his wife Judi. "There are so many contradictions in their lives that are quite alarming," Judi Allen told the Mail Online.

The relationship was first revealed 7 years, but its resurrection couldn't come at a worse time for her very pro-life husband and former Pennsylvania senator. He also just landed the evangelicals support over the weekend, and for some Karen was a selling point.

According to TheStar.com, James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, reportedly praised Karen Santorum for her decision to give up her career to raise a family; he expressed reservations, meantime, about Callista Gingrich. Participants say Dobson asked the group to consider whether Gingrich's third wife would make a suitable first lady.

In the meantime, Santorum is duking it out with Ron Paul in a tie for third in the South Carolina polls.

Spouses matter to voters, and we often judge the candidate by his wife. Santorum even said himself, "When you look at someone to determine whether they'd be the right person for public office, look at who they lay down with at night and what they believe," he said on a campaign stop last year.

In recent remarks on abortion, her husband said he would "advocate that any doctor that performs an abortion should be criminally charged for doing so." But then his wife slept with an abortion doctor. Hmm…talk about a flip flopper.

Will this affect your vote? Should we base our votes on candidates' spouses past and beliefs?
