You've seen clothing on the runway, but never like this. Today the Dallas Museum of Art opens their exhibit on famed French designer Jean Paul Gaultier.
A sea of mannequins, each wearing a remarkable Gaultier runway piece and earrily donning real electronic faces, greet you at the entrance and you call tell immediately, this is no ordinary display of fashion. Gaultier is one of a kind. Some of the dresses are dazzling, glamorous. Other outfits are shocking. Gaultier has a way of showing the breathtakingly beautiful side and gritty, ugly side of pop culture today. I spoke with the famous designer when he came to Dallas to open his exhibit.
Roni: When I look around this exhibit these are things from the 70s until the 2000s JP: I wanted to show a real mix, like we do in music, to do a real mix of clothes I have done
Roni: Tell me about some of your religious outfits JP: I like rabbin chic, it was becasue I was in NY once and I saw coming out of the library alot of rabbi coming out and it was so beautiful. The purpose was to show the beauty not be provocative
Roni: Like even when I did the pointed bra, for Madonna, that famous pointed bra. JP:No the first one was for my teddy bear
Roni: You made the corset and lingerie famus for women to wear as outerwear, what is the inspiration? It was my grandmother JP: That underwear, that dress that lingerie is beautiful in black satin, why not as a dress?
Roni: A lot of your statement is about strong women and mixing masculine and feminine, I think this is a great example JP: The top part is like a tuxedo jacket and the bottom is like a trouser, which is a matador, toreadorbut made in a very, with the embroidery, in a very feminine way
The exhibit will be open until February 12th, it's a must see
