Residents are slowly led back in to the apartment complex where senior corporal Norm Smith was shot earlier Tuesday evening.

Dallas police say around 6 p.m. two officers attempted to serve a felony assault warrant at an apartment complex at loop 12 in South Dallas. After they knocked on the door, the officers were immediately met with gunfire through the door. Officer Smith was shot at least once in the head. He was taken to Baylor University Medical Center where he died.

Three suspects were in the apartment and were taken into custody. Dallas police is investigating the murder.

Smith was an officer of the year, and about to celebrate his 18th anniversary as a Dallas Police officer.


"He was a great, great, great street officer, and he had the heart of a warrior," a Dallas police spokesman said earlier today.

Smith's wife is a lieutenant, they have two children.
