Breaking the cycle of poverty

Across Maryland the aftershocks of the Great Recession of 2007 are still being felt nearly eight years later. While unemployment has fallen from its peak levels in 2008-2010, the recovery has left many of the state's most vulnerable families still struggling to make up for lost ground. Maryland, in particular, has suffered because so much of the state's economy is built around federal jobs and contracts, which the government began scaling back after the recession formally ended.
