It is certainly nice to see that McCabe School is taking safety precautions seriously. I have noticed an increase in sheriff’s deputies visible throughout the mornings, patrolling during school hours and physically present after school during student pick-ups. Kudos to the school board, administrators and staff of McCabe School, as well as the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office for taking care of our precious children. — Grateful Parent, Calexico
The letter writer is correct, the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office has increased its presence at McCabe, and every other country school in the unincorporated area of the county.
Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut, Sheriff Ray Loera ordered patrol deputies to make themselves known at schools like McCabe, Magnolia, Meadows, Mulberry and other country schools.
Miramontes said the main time of patrols are morning, midday and afterschool, with available deputies even getting out and walking the campuses or the surrounding area when possible.
He said the deputies do this when they have available time and are not responding to service calls. Miramontes added that reserve deputies are also used to increase numbers.
The letter writer isn’t the first to take notice. Miramontes said a couple of parents have actually come out to the Sheriff’s Office to say thank you.
“We really appreciate that and we share that with our deputies,” he said.
The Sandy Hook shooting, which occurred Dec. 14, 2012, in Newtown, Conn., really shocked a nation. Twenty children and six adults were massacred by suspect Adam Lanza.
