Trinidad and Tobago: As a conservation success story, Trinidad is now considered the world's top destination for "turtle tourism." Conservation programs have turned many of the island's would-be turtle poachers into protectors, as turtle tourism earns nearly three times as much money as the illegal sale of turtle meat, shells and eggs. On the northeastern coast, tourism has skyrocketed along with the population of leatherback turtles, a critically endangered species, since conservation efforts began in the 1990s. During peak nesting season in May-June, as many as 700 turtles now converge at Grand Riviere beach and nearby Matura, bringing in about 60,000 tourists and $8.2 million per year.
