    On June 12, three Israeli teenagers were kidnapped in Gush Etzion, in the West Bank, as they were hitchhiking to their homes. The Israel Defense Forces began a search for the three teens. In the early days of the investigation, Israel arrested approximately 250 Palestinians, including nearly all of the West Bank leaders of Hamas, the group which has governed the Gaza Strip after winning a majority of seats in the Palestinian Parliament in 2006. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that the teens had been kidnapped by Hamas, but the group and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas denied Hamas' involvement.
