A recent visit with family in Chicago coincided with the city's annual air and water show. Throughout the day, fighter jets in tight formation would suddenly roar overhead at astonishingly low altitudes. After watching me duck and cringe a few times, my son mused that Chicagoans endure this experience once a year, but it always makes him think about faraway cities and towns where this is an all-day, every-day ordeal, only there the planes bristle with live weapons and residents never know if this time they and their children live in the target neighborhood.
